LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan laughed upon hearing his conviction in the £190 million corruption case, his sister, Aleema Khan, stated on Saturday.
Speaking to the media outside a Lahore court, Aleema said, “When the PTI founder heard the verdict, he laughed. We have entrusted our matter to Allah.”
An accountability court convicted Imran and his wife Bushra Bibi in the £190 million case — also known as the Al-Qadir Trust case — sentencing the former prime minister to 14 years and his wife to seven years in prison.
Imran, who has been in custody since August 2023 facing nearly 200 cases, has called this conviction a politically motivated effort to remove him from the political landscape.
Aleema asserted that the former prime minister urged the judge to announce the verdict promptly so he could challenge it in the high court, expressing confidence that the decision would be overturned.
Federal Information Minister Ataullah Tarar, however, termed the conviction as an “open-and-shut case” and based on merit. He pointed out that the lack of concrete evidence presented by the defence led to the court’s decision.
