Karachi: Despite the city’s history of street crimes, the recent abduction of two children within a week has sparked panic among its residents.
Seven-year-old Mohammed Sarim was abducted on January 7 from North Karachi’s Sector 5. Later, on January 14, two more children, five-year-old Aliyan and six-year-old Ali Raza, went missing from the Garden area.
Sarim had gone to a madrassa in his area but never returned. His father reported receiving a ransom demand of Rs500,000 via messages from an international number, later traced to a group in Punjab by police and FIA.
Sindh’s Inspector General of Police has established a special unit for missing children, but Sarim’s case is yet to be transferred there.
Aliyan and Ali Raza’s disappearance was captured on CCTV footage, showing a man and a woman on a motorcycle with the children heading toward Lyari.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of the incidents, ordering immediate action for the children’s recovery and increased police patrolling across the city.
