To improve road safety and traffic management, Lahore has introduced a dedicated biker lane on both sides of Ferozepur Road, stretching from the Canal to Lahore Bridge.
This eco-friendly initiative separates motorcyclists from the main highway with colorful dividers, enhancing safety and streamlining traffic.
Led by the Lahore Development Authority (LDA), the project aligns with a broader vision to elevate Lahore to the standards of developed global cities. LDA Director General Tahir Farooq stated that this biker lane aims to reduce traffic accidents significantly while promoting safer commuting options.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced on her official X account, “Dedicated biker lanes will soon be introduced on major roads across all Punjab districts. This step will not only prevent accidents but also ensure smoother traffic flow.”
Mixed Reactions
While the initiative has been praised for its intent, criticism has emerged regarding poor planning:
- The lack of alternatives for bus stops has led to buses obstructing traffic while picking up passengers.
- Concerns have arisen about rainwater drainage issues during the monsoon due to the biker lane.
- Petrol pumps, shops, and banks along the road may face operational challenges due to restricted access caused by the lane.
Public feedback is a mix of optimism and concern. While many view the project as a step toward modernization, they emphasize the need to refine it to address these challenges effectively.
Local stakeholders have urged authorities to reassess the project and implement necessary adjustments to minimize adverse effects.
