Google Pay is set to officially launch in Pakistan by mid-March 2025, introducing its popular contactless payment system to the local market, marking a significant milestone in the country’s growing digital payment landscape.
Sources confirm that the tech giant’s entry into Pakistan was confirmed in November 2024, with Visa and Mastercard facilitating the rollout. Users will be able to link their bank-issued debit and credit cards to Google Pay via the Google Wallet app.
Initially, the focus will be on enabling contactless payments, with features like loyalty cards and public transport passes not being included in the first phase.
Industry insiders report that preparations are in full swing, with four to six leading banks collaborating with Visa and Mastercard to meet technical requirements.
Google Wallet’s launch in Pakistan is expected to bring several benefits, including secure payments, enhanced financial inclusion, and simplified travel and event attendance. Despite challenges with PayPal’s entry into Pakistan, Google Wallet is seen as a promising alternative for digital payments.
