With the start of the new year, many people set goals related to health, such as exercising and following a healthy diet. However, it can sometimes feel overwhelming to keep up with fitness trends.
But research shows you don’t have to follow all the latest trends, as even a short walk can have incredible benefits.
According to research, just 11 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise a day may lower your risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, or premature death, as reported by CNN.
However, if that seems too much, even five minutes of walking per day can offer health benefits, said Dr. Andrew Freeman.
Dr. Freeman, the Director of Cardiovascular Prevention and Wellness at National Jewish Health, recommends aiming for 30 minutes of exercise a day, which could include brisk walking and weightlifting.
But he acknowledged that this might not be feasible for those just starting. Freeman suggests incorporating any form of movement into your daily routine, even if it’s just a five-minute walk.
You can walk while heading to a mall or gym or take the stairs. CNN fitness contributor Dana Santas also suggested walking with friends.
“Most malls open their doors early (before the actual stores open) to allow walkers to get their steps in by doing laps around the mall’s interior levels,” Santas said.
Dr. Freeman also recommends completing your walk in the morning to start the day positively. He added that walking is beneficial not only for your body but also for your mental health, helping to quit smoking and reduce anxiety and depression.
