January 31 Deadline Could Be Extended if Meaningful Progress is Made
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Shibli Faraz has suggested that the deadline for dialogue with the government could be extended beyond January 31 if significant progress is achieved. Speaking to a local channel, Faraz noted that with 20 days remaining, clarity on the direction of talks would soon emerge.
He emphasized that meaningful progress in negotiations could justify a short extension, adding that the next round of talks could be arranged on a day’s notice. However, no concrete steps have been taken so far. National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq confirmed that neither side had approached him for arranging the talks.
PTI has set conditions for negotiations, including the release of Imran Khan and other party leaders, and the formation of judicial commissions to investigate incidents on May 9 and November 26.
PTI Senator Ali Zafar reiterated that Imran Khan remains steadfast in his decision not to seek any deals or concessions, choosing to fight a legal battle. He also called for discussions on electoral reforms and the appointment of a new chief election commissioner.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif criticized PTI, stating that its attempts to disrupt the economy had failed. He noted that remittances from overseas Pakistanis had increased despite PTI’s claims.
The PTI leadership accused the government of attempting to derail the negotiation process. Former Speaker Asad Qaiser stressed PTI’s commitment to constitutional governance, judicial independence, and upholding the will of the people.
Faraz concluded that extending the deadline slightly would not be an issue if it helped move the talks forward, as the party is open to any steps that serve the national interest.
