Slow internet impacting KP’s IT sector, says special assistant to CM
Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced its intention to contact tech mogul Elon Musk to address the ongoing issue of slow internet speeds in the province.
Shafqat Ayaz, Special Assistant to the KP Chief Minister, revealed that the IT sector in KP has been severely affected by the internet slowdown and that other experts will also be approached to find a resolution.
Unclear Reasons Behind Internet Crisis in Pakistan
Ayaz added that the reasons for the internet issues in the region remain unknown. However, the Pakistani government has frequently attributed the disruptions to submarine cable faults, while other reports suggest that authorities may be experimenting with a “firewall.”
Elon Musk Awaits Approval for Starlink in Pakistan
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, confirmed that his satellite internet company Starlink is awaiting government approval to launch its services in Pakistan.
Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, Musk stated: “We are waiting for approval from the government.”
The comments came during a conversation with Pakistani social media activist Sanam Jamali, who urged Musk to expedite Starlink’s launch in Pakistan, highlighting the millions who stand to benefit from improved connectivity, education, and opportunities.
IT Ministry Engages Starlink
Amid nationwide internet disruptions, Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja disclosed last month that Pakistan is in talks with Starlink to bring its services to the country.
“We are in talks with Starlink to bring them to Pakistan,” Khawaja said during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecommunication.
