DC Khan Welcomes Peaceful Arrival of Aid Convoy
The first relief convoy reached Parachinar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kurram district after several days of delay, Deputy Commissioner Ashfaq Khan confirmed on Wednesday. In a video statement, he welcomed the convoy’s peaceful arrival and urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and maintain peace.
Details of the Convoy
According to KP government spokesperson Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, the convoy, consisting of 40 vehicles carrying essential relief items, was dispatched following successful negotiations mediated by the Grand Jirga, the Kurram Peace Committee, and other local groups.
Background
The convoy, initially scheduled for last week, was delayed due to an attack on Kurram DC Javedullah Mehsud, which left five people injured. The provincial government announced the convoy would proceed once the security situation stabilized.
Tribal Clashes and Crisis
Since July 2024, tribal conflicts in Kurram have claimed over 200 lives, leading to severe shortages of medicine, oxygen, and other essentials. Protests erupted in Parachinar and Karachi, demanding road reopenings and aid for affected individuals.
The KP government declared Kurram “disaster-hit,” airlifting medical supplies and evacuating critically ill residents. Authorities also brokered a peace agreement, including a weapons surrender and the dismantling of bunkers, to restore order.
