The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has declared that any party engaging in aggression in the Kurram district will be considered terrorists following the dismantling of existing bunkers. KP Chief Minister’s Adviser Barrister Muhammad Saif announced on Friday that, under the Apex Committee’s decision, Kurram will be cleared of arms and bunkers to establish lasting peace.
Barrister Saif stated that both conflicting sides have been given 15 days to submit a detailed plan for surrendering weapons. A strict ban on the public display and use of weapons will be enforced, along with a prohibition on fundraising for purchasing arms in the region.
He further clarified that no new bunkers will be allowed, and all existing ones must be removed within a month. Afterward, any group involved in hostilities will face strict action under anti-terrorism laws.
The district administration confirmed that the Peshawar-Parachinar highway will soon reopen for convoys, with no obstructions permitted along the route.
The two rival tribes in Kurram have finally signed a peace agreement after extensive negotiations held during a grand jirga. The jirga conducted 50 sessions, involving all parties who played a crucial role in formulating the agreement. The accord outlined 14 points aimed at restoring peace in the region.
Kurram, located near the Afghanistan border, has long been plagued by sectarian violence. Recent clashes have resulted in over 200 deaths in the past few months.
The November clashes intensified the humanitarian crisis, causing severe shortages of essential medicines and oxygen supplies. Government officials have been airlifting emergency aid and evacuating critically ill individuals. The region has been declared “disaster-hit,” and authorities emphasized that the removal of bunkers and disarmament are vital for achieving peace.
