PESHAWAR: Adviser to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister on Information Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif announced additional security measures to ensure sustainable peace in Kurram district, which has been plagued by violence.
Two platoons of the Frontier Constabulary (FC) will be deployed, while recruitment for 400 police personnel to secure the Kurram highway has been approved, he said.
The announcement follows a 14-point peace agreement signed between two warring tribes in Kurram after extensive negotiations mediated by a grand peace jirga under the supervision of Major General Zulfiqar Bhatti.
Barrister Saif stated that both parties had agreed to surrender their weapons to the government.
The jirga, supported by administrative authorities like the commissioner and DIG, conducted over 50 sessions to finalize the agreement.
Despite prior truces, violence persisted, claiming over 130 lives since November and creating a humanitarian crisis with severe shortages of medicine and oxygen due to road blockades.
The adviser assured that relief efforts, including airlifting 15 tonnes of medicines and over 700 people, were underway.
He also mentioned that the process of compensating victims would begin soon.
