The Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) has granted a construction license to the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) for Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit 5 (C-5) in Mianwali. PAEC applied for the license in April this year, submitting the Preliminary Safety Assessment Report (PSAR) along with other required documents covering nuclear safety, radiation protection, emergency preparedness, waste management, and nuclear security.
The license was issued after a thorough review, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements under national and international standards.
C-5 is an advanced third-generation Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) based on the Chinese Hualong design (HPR1000), featuring active and passive safety systems, including double-shell containment and a reactor filtered venting system. It has a design life of 60 years.
This is the third Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Pakistan with this design, following K-2 and K-3, which are successfully operating in Karachi and contributing to the national grid.
Significantly, the C-5 will be Pakistan’s largest electricity-producing NPP, with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts.
