U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s advisor, Richard Grenell, has called for the release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
PTI’s Response:
PTI leaders Zartaj Gul and Aliya Hamza welcomed Grenell’s statement, saying that supporting human rights is commendable. PTI spokesman Sheikh Waqas Akram clarified that they do not seek external intervention and want Imran Khan’s release in accordance with the Constitution and law.
PML-N’s Stance:
Senator Talal Chaudhry of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stated that this is an internal matter for Pakistan, and the U.S. should respect Pakistan’s sovereignty. He rejected any external pressure for Imran Khan’s release, citing allegations of corruption and constitutional violations against him.
U.S. Position:
The U.S. has expressed concern over the sentences given to Imran Khan’s supporters in military courts in Pakistan, which could strain relations between the two countries.
