Alec Baldwin is now facing a civil lawsuit following the dismissal of criminal charges related to the fatal on-set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust in 2021. Hutchins’ family has filed a claim for damages against Baldwin and plans to call Baldwin for a sworn testimony in New Mexico civil court.
Women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred confirmed on Tuesday that Hutchins’ parents and sister have filed a claim for damages and plan to subpoena Alec Baldwin for a sworn statement in New Mexico civil court.
Hutchins was killed during a rehearsal at the Santa Fe film ranch when Baldwin, handling a prop pistol, discharged the weapon, resulting in her death and injuring director Joel Souza. Baldwin has maintained that he did not pull the trigger but rather the gun discharged accidentally.
The charge of involuntary manslaughter against Baldwin was dropped in July, following allegations that he concealed evidence during the investigation. Allred criticized New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez for not appealing the dismissal, accusing him of being a “Grinch” who stole Christmas. Torrez’s spokesperson, Lauren Rodriguez, defended the decision, explaining that the office must focus on cases with “significant irregularities.”
“We can now move forward with our civil case,” Allred stated, emphasizing that Hutchins’ family is committed to holding Baldwin accountable. Hutchins’ sister, Svetlana Zoomko, said, “Mr. Baldwin must be held accountable.”
This lawsuit is being pursued alongside a separate settlement involving Hutchins’ widow and son.
