French President Emmanuel Macron announced a new government on Monday, led by Prime Minister François Bayrou. This marks Macron’s fourth prime ministerial appointment in 2024, aimed at steering the country out of a political crisis and securing the passage of the 2025 budget.
In the new cabinet, former Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne has been appointed as Minister of Education, while former Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin takes on the role of Minister of Justice. Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu and Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot retain their positions. Eric Lombard, head of the public-sector bank Caisse des Dépôts, has been named Minister of Economy.
Bayrou expressed pride in his team, stating, “I am very proud of the team we are presenting this evening.” He added that his “experienced” cabinet aims to “rebuild trust.”
These appointments come at a time when France is facing political instability, hindering the approval of the budget. Bayrou’s government’s primary objective is to navigate through a no-confidence vote and secure the approval of the 2025 budget.
