On December 14, 2024, South Korea’s parliament voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol following his attempt to impose martial law, which was rejected by the legislature. The impeachment motion was supported by 204 lawmakers, while 85 opposed it. As a result, Prime Minister Han Duck-so has become the acting president, and the Constitutional Court will decide within six months whether Yoon will be permanently removed from office. This impeachment follows widespread protests against Yoon’s martial law decree.
