Jay Shah, the former Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has taken on the role of Chairman at the International Cricket Council (ICC). His appointment comes at a pivotal time for international cricket, particularly in relation to the 2025 Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan. This tournament has sparked tension between Pakistan and India, with India expressing security concerns over playing in Pakistan. Despite reassurances, India has yet to commit to sending its team.
In his first statement as ICC Chair, Shah emphasized his focus on promoting the sport’s global inclusivity, especially through its inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and advancing women’s cricket. He outlined his vision to take the sport to new heights by working closely with ICC member countries.
The Champions Trophy deadlock, stemming from the refusal of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to play in Pakistan, has led to the proposal of a “partnership formula.” Under this formula, both India and Pakistan would play their scheduled matches in Dubai rather than their home countries, thus allowing the tournament to proceed smoothly despite ongoing political tensions.
The Pakistani Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed hope that a long-term solution will be devised to facilitate smoother relations and ensure the successful hosting of future ICC events.
