Shaza Fatima, the Minister of State for Interior, defended the government’s decision to block X (formerly Twitter), stating that the move was taken based on directives from the Ministry of Interior in the interest of national security.
Fatima clarified that the decision to block X should not be seen as a restriction on freedom of expression, highlighting that fewer than 2 percent of Pakistan’s population uses the platform.
In addressing the wider issue of cybersecurity, Fatima emphasized the rise in cyber-attacks within the country and underscored the need for stronger cybersecurity measures. “Cybersecurity is crucial at this time,” she stated, adding that the Ministry of Interior had directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to take all necessary actions to protect Pakistan’s digital space.
Fatima reassured that the blocking of X would not impact Pakistan’s IT industry, as other platforms like YouTube and Facebook remain accessible for free expression. She also noted that the country’s broadband industry is thriving, with IT exports reaching unprecedented levels, contributing significantly to the digital economy.
On matters of national security, the Minister reaffirmed that the safety of foreign dignitaries, including those visiting Pakistan, remains a key priority for the government. “The security of foreign guests is our responsibility,” Fatima emphasized.
Concluding her remarks, Fatima reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the IT sector while ensuring the nation’s security and safety.
