The Pakistani government has reiterated its firm stance against engaging in talks with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Addressing the media during a weekly briefing in Islamabad, Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch categorically denied any dialogue with the TTP, emphasizing Pakistan’s unwavering position on the matter.
Pakistan’s Clear Stance on TTP
Baloch reaffirmed that no proposals for negotiations with the TTP are under consideration, declaring such suggestions disrespectful to the victims of terrorism. “Pakistan has reiterated on several occasions that there are no talks with the TTP, and any such proposals are an affront to the families of thousands of victims of terrorism,” she stated.
She further clarified that Pakistan and China do not have any plans for engagement with the TTP, despite baseless speculations.
TTP’s Past Attacks on Chinese Nationals
Pakistan’s strong stance follows a history of deadly attacks attributed to the TTP, targeting Chinese nationals working on development projects. In March 2023, a suicide bombing in Shangla’s Besham district claimed the lives of six people, including five Chinese citizens. Similarly, in July 2021, 13 people, including nine Chinese nationals, were killed in a bomb attack in Kohistan. Such incidents underline the importance of coordinated counter-terrorism efforts.
Diplomatic Engagement with Afghanistan
Responding to questions regarding interactions with Afghan officials, Baloch explained that Pakistan’s Chargé d’Affaires in Afghanistan met with Afghan Defence Minister Mullah Yaqoob to discuss matters of mutual interest. She highlighted that Pakistani diplomats maintain regular communication with the interim Afghan government, ensuring open channels for dialogue on regional issues.
Strengthened Relations with Belarus
President Aleksandr Lukashenko of Belarus recently visited Pakistan on the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The visit resulted in the signing of several agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance bilateral cooperation in diverse fields, including environmental protection, disaster management, halal trade, vocational education, and science and technology.
A notable achievement of this visit was the “Roadmap for Comprehensive Cooperation between Pakistan and Belarus for 2025-2027,” which aims to deepen ties and foster mutual growth in key sectors.
