ISLAMABAD: Following the violent dispersal of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protesters in Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday directed the establishment of a specialized anti-riot force to handle future violent demonstrations.
The protests, led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and Imran Khan’s spouse Bushra Bibi, resulted in casualties during a crackdown by law enforcement. Conflicting reports have emerged about the number of deaths.
During a cabinet meeting to address the law-and-order situation, the prime minister stressed the need for a professional anti-riot force equipped with modern tools and advanced training. Referring to international examples, he urged immediate action to improve the capacity of law enforcement agencies.
Imposition of Governor’s Rule in KP Discussed
The cabinet also debated the possibility of imposing Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as some ministers argued that CM Gandapur’s frequent mobilization of state resources for protests posed a threat to national stability. However, no decision was reached on the matter.
PM Shehbaz expressed concern over the destruction of public and private property during protests and directed legal action against those responsible. He also called for improvements in the prosecution system to ensure accountability.
Economic Reforms and National Security
Addressing the National Security Workshop at the National Defence University, the prime minister highlighted the direct link between economic and national security. He underscored the government’s commitment to implement a “Charter of Economy” aimed at economic stabilization.
“Our focus is to privatize loss-making state-owned enterprises and facilitate private businesses,” he said, emphasizing that a coordinated effort with all institutions was essential for economic progress. He also celebrated the milestone of the Pakistan Stock Exchange crossing 100,000 points, attributing it to teamwork and robust policies.
The PM acknowledged that Pakistan faced significant economic challenges, including external and internal debt, circular debt in the power and gas sectors, and widespread tax evasion. He reiterated the government’s resolve to address these issues with a “homegrown economic plan” to ensure sustainable growth.
Security Challenges and Unity
Apart from economic challenges, PM Shehbaz highlighted ongoing security issues, mentioning the sacrifices made by the nation in the fight against terrorism. He cited recent violence in Parachinar as a grim reminder of the challenges faced and called for unity to overcome such threats.
He stressed the importance of boosting economic growth to bridge the external debt gap and urged reforms in the energy and taxation sectors to tackle inefficiencies and theft.
Lebanon Ceasefire and Condolences to Malaysia
In a separate statement, the prime minister welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, expressing hope for lasting peace in Lebanon. He also extended condolences to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim over the devastation caused by recent floods in Malaysia.
