On the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Palestinians’ right to self-determination.
The day, observed annually on November 29, was first proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1977. This year, the commemoration comes amidst a prolonged Israeli offensive on Gaza, which has lasted over 13 months. In retaliation to Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attacks, Israeli strikes have claimed over 44,300 Palestinian lives and left nearly 105,000 injured, with thousands still buried under the rubble.
President Zardari condemned Israel’s relentless aggression and demanded an end to the “genocide of the Palestinian people.” He emphasized the global community’s responsibility to act, stating, “The ongoing occupation and blatant violations of international law remain the greatest obstacles to peace in the region.” The president reiterated Pakistan’s steadfast support for the Palestinian struggle for freedom, dignity, and justice.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged the immense suffering of Palestinians, describing their resilience in the face of “unending genocidal violence.” He emphasized the urgent need for global action to ensure justice for the Palestinian people.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also voiced his support, stating, “The UN will continue to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their inalienable rights to live in peace, security, and dignity.”
Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. She welcomed the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon and called for adherence to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, emphasizing the importance of humanitarian assistance and the reconstruction of affected areas.
Speaking at the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution in Belgium, Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch urged immediate measures to resolve the Palestinian issue and advocated for full UN membership for Palestine.
Senator Sherry Rehman, in her message, highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, where Palestinians face relentless persecution. “Words are no longer enough; they need tangible support,” she stressed, condemning Israel’s refusal to allow a ceasefire or humanitarian aid.
The day underscored Pakistan’s long-standing solidarity with Palestine, advocating for a sovereign Palestinian state and an end to the ongoing violence and occupation.
