ISLAMABAD: After the recent PTI-led protests brought Islamabad to a halt, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has declared zero tolerance for future demonstrations that threaten the capital’s stability and economy. Addressing the federal cabinet on Wednesday, the premier stressed the need for decisive measures to prevent further disruptions.
Economic and Social Impact
PM Shehbaz highlighted the massive daily economic losses caused by the protests, amounting to approximately Rs190 billion. He attributed these damages to stalled exports, disrupted imports, and shuttered businesses, further straining the nation’s fragile economy. The protests also affected vulnerable groups, such as daily wagers and patients needing medical assistance, the prime minister noted.
In a broader economic context, the PM cited the stock exchange’s significant dip of 4,000 points during the unrest, reflecting investor unease. He lamented that such actions by the PTI leadership have made them “permanent enemies of Pakistan’s progress.”
A History of Disruptions
Drawing comparisons with past events, the PM referenced the 2014 PTI sit-in, which delayed the Chinese president’s visit, and other protests that tarnished Pakistan’s reputation during critical international engagements. The prime minister expressed regret that such political upheavals had become increasingly frequent, demanding an urgent reevaluation of their societal and economic consequences.
Call for Stronger Deterrence
PM Shehbaz criticized the judicial system for not delivering exemplary punishments to those involved in the May 9 riots. He argued that harsher consequences for past incidents could have deterred the recent chaos.
The premier acknowledged the role of law enforcement agencies, including the army and police, in efficiently managing the protests. He expressed gratitude to the army chief and other officials for their coordinated efforts in restoring order.
Security Concerns in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
The PM also highlighted the deteriorating security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where terrorism is on the rise. He criticized the provincial government for neglecting its law enforcement responsibilities while leading violent protests in Islamabad.
Coalition Government’s Role
In a veiled criticism of the PTI, the PM stated that the coalition government had sacrificed political gains to stabilize the country and avert economic default. He emphasized that Pakistan’s economy had shown signs of recovery in recent months due to these efforts.
Opposition’s Failed Protest
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar labeled the PTI protest a “colossal failure,” asserting that the opposition’s plans had unraveled. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order while ensuring the public’s safety and well-being.
