Political Unrest in Capital Delays Final Matches
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced that the last two 50-over matches of the Pakistan Shaheens-Sri Lanka ‘A’ series have been postponed due to the ongoing political turmoil in Islamabad. The matches, originally scheduled for Wednesday and Friday at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, will now be rescheduled for later dates.
Shaheens Lead the Series
The Pakistan Shaheens are currently leading the series, having won the two four-day matches 1-0, as well as the opening 50-over game by a commanding 108-run victory on Monday.
Violence and Protests Grips Islamabad
The postponement coincides with escalating violence in the capital, as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protesters, led by the wife of PTI founder Imran Khan and senior party leaders, clashed with law enforcement agencies. The protests were centered around demands for the release of the party’s jailed leader and other political issues.
Military Intervention and Curfew Imposed
In response to the unrest, the Interior Ministry invoked Article 245, granting the military authority to assist in restoring order. This includes the power to impose curfews in areas deemed necessary to curb lawlessness and contain the protests.
Both the PCB and Sri Lanka Cricket will now collaborate to finalize the new dates for the remaining matches of the series once the situation in Islamabad stabilizes.
