Afghan Nationals Face New Residency Rules
In the aftermath of recent clashes between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protesters and law enforcement, the federal government announced a crackdown on Afghan nationals in Islamabad. Afghan residents will no longer be permitted to stay in the federal capital after December 31 without official permission.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi clarified that Afghan citizens must secure a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Deputy Commissioner’s office to remain in Islamabad. This policy follows the arrest of 37 Afghan nationals allegedly involved in PTI protests in Islamabad, as well as additional arrests in Punjab.
Geofencing of Refugee Camps
As part of precautionary measures, the government initiated geofencing of Afghan refugee camps earlier this month. Authorities aim to identify and act against those involved in criminal activities during political unrest.
Restoring Normalcy in the Capital
Naqvi emphasized that the government’s top priority is restoring normal life in Islamabad. He reported that most roads have reopened and assured the public that routine activities would resume soon.
Clarifications on Clashes and Deaths
Addressing rumors about casualties, the interior minister dismissed social media claims of 33 bodies brought to hospitals as “propaganda.” He challenged PTI to disclose names of the deceased and argued that no law enforcer carried firearms during the protests.
Casualties Among Security Forces
Islamabad Inspector General (IG) Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi revealed that five security personnel, including three Rangers, were martyred in the clashes. Additionally, 71 law enforcement officers sustained injuries, with 27 suffering gunshot wounds. Rioters reportedly set fire to police vehicles and damaged 161 CCTV cameras of the Safe City project to evade surveillance.
Weapons Seized and Arrests Made
During the protests, authorities arrested 954 individuals, including 37 Afghan nationals, and confiscated 39 weapons, including a Kalashnikov. PTI, however, claimed that eight of its supporters were killed during the clashes.
Hospital Reports
A spokesperson from Polyclinic Hospital confirmed receiving two dead bodies and 26 injured individuals following the protests.
