Minimal Impact of Rainfall
A light drizzle in parts of Lahore, including Gulberg, Ferozepur Road, Canal Road, Thokar Niaz Baig, and Johar Town, has brought little respite from the persistent smog choking the city. The Meteorological Department forecasts a maximum temperature of 24°C and a minimum of 14°C, with no significant improvement in air quality.
Rising Air Pollution Levels
Lahore’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached a hazardous level of 404, as recorded by the International Air Monitor. Environmental experts warn that the concentration of harmful chemicals in the air is 55 times higher than the World Health Organization’s safe limits.
Affected Areas
The worst AQI readings have been observed in Gulberg (529), FC College (495), Valencia Town (483), and Defense Phase 5 (465). Other highly impacted areas include Garden Town (433), Wapda Town (412), Ferozepur Road (412), and Shimla Pahari (404). Although slightly lower, Johar Town and Township also report unhealthy levels at 372.
Health Advisories
Environmental and medical experts are urging residents to minimize outdoor activities and wear masks to mitigate health risks. The smog is increasing cases of respiratory and cardiovascular issues while also causing reduced visibility across the city.
Call for Urgent Action
Easterly winds bringing pollutants from neighboring regions are exacerbating the crisis, highlighting the need for immediate and robust measures to address Lahore’s deteriorating air quality. Residents and experts alike are calling for stricter environmental policies and effective implementation to combat this escalating public health emergency.
