Severe Air Pollution in Lahore
Lahore is experiencing dangerously high levels of air pollution, with the city’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 293, according to the International Air Monitor. This reading has remained above hazardous levels for more than ten hours, significantly surpassing the World Health Organization’s recommended air quality guidelines.
Areas with the Worst Air Quality
Several areas in Lahore are experiencing extreme pollution. Sundar Industrial Estate reported an AQI of 569, while Shimla Pahari and the city center followed closely with AQI readings of 519 and 511, respectively. Other locations such as Johar Town (416), Gulberg (388), and Defense phases 8 (376) and 5 (346) also showed hazardous pollution levels, indicating a widespread crisis.
Health Risks and Measures Taken
The air quality is now 43.6 times more polluted than the limits set by the World Health Organization, posing significant health risks to residents. In response, authorities have stepped up enforcement efforts, including sealing 63 shops for violating standard operating procedures and issuing fines to 127 smoke-emitting vehicles. Additionally, 47 polluting vehicles have been detained by the police, and Rs. 7 lakh in fines has been imposed on vehicles operating without fitness certificates.
Preventive Measures and Public Guidance
To further reduce pollution levels, the district administration has mandated that markets close by 8 PM and restaurants by 10 PM. Residents are strongly advised to take health precautions and minimize outdoor activities during this period of high air pollution.
