One of Indian fashion’s brightest stars, Rohit Bal, passed away on Friday, two weeks after returning to the spotlight following a health scare, as many celebrated Diwali. Since last year, the designer had been having heart problems.
Bal left a legacy that shaped the Indian fashion industry for well over three decades. He was known for his ability to combine cultural heritage with modern aesthetics.
His fashion career began in 1986 with the help of his brother Rajiv, and in 1990, he launched his own label. Bal’s designs frequently reflected Kashmir’s lush landscapes and traditions, which his family was forced to leave when he was a young child. He was raised in a Kashmiri Pandit family.
Intricate embroidery, lotus motifs, peacocks, and Kashmiri-inspired velvet were all elegantly woven into contemporary silhouettes in Bal’s collections.
Bal most recently made a comeback at Lakme Fashion Week 2024, where he showed a collection with roses as the main theme that celebrated change and nature. Bal’s ability to embrace beauty, change, and continuity was captured in this final performance, which seemed almost prophetic.
Bal was a storyteller as a designer, combining fantasy and history to create timeless clothing that paid tribute to India’s rich cultural tapestry. Bollywood elites, global celebrities, and even Ivanka Trump wore his creations, opting for a Bal creation for a state dinner in India in 2020.
In the fashion community and among friends, Bal was referred to as “Gudda,” and celebrities frequently mentioned his name when paying tribute to his life and work. On social media, fashion and Bollywood celebrities expressed their grief and respect.
Sonam Kapoor, who frequently walked for Bal and wore his designs, posted a touching tribute to the designer on Instagram, “Dear Gudda, I hear about your passing on my way to celebrate Diwali in your gorgeous creation that you generously lent to me for the second time.” I am blessed to have known, worn, and walked alongside you numerous times. I hope all is well with you. Always have my full support.
In his final performance, Bal’s muse Ananya Panday also expressed her grief. She simply captioned a memorable picture she shared with Bal, “Gudda,” using the emojis of a red heart and a dove.
Kareena Kapoor Khan honored Bal with heart-emoji-adorned vintage photographs. Aditi Rao Hydari paid him a touching tribute in the interim: Relax in style and beauty.
In a similar vein, Sidharth Malhotra added, “Deeply saddened by the loss. I pray that his soul finds peace. Shanti Om.”
In her Instagram stories, Priyanka Chopra also posted a picture of Bal with the caption “Gone too young.” Rest in peace.Bal will always be remembered as a beauty craftsman, a heritage storyteller, and a pioneer whose example will inspire future generations.
