Is it possible that the dragons of Westeros will finally be seen on screen?
The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, two industry publications, reported on Thursday that at least one Game of Thrones movie is still in the very early stages of production.
During its eight-season run from 2011 to 2019, the original HBO Game of Thrones television show became a global cultural phenomenon, attracting huge audiences and a record 59 Emmy Awards.
The popular television series based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel A Song of Ice and Fire has already produced the TV spinoff House of the Dragon, and additional small-screen adaptations have been confirmed to be in the works.
However, parent company Warner Bros. Discovery has been opposed to bringing the Martin and Thrones franchise to theaters, despite the fact that showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have previously discussed the possibility of making films based on the universe.
Thursday, The Hollywood Reporter suggested that the studio’s recent leadership changes and the success of franchises like The Batman, Dune, and the upcoming Harry Potter TV series may have finally brought about a change.
According to the report, Warner Bros. “has been quietly developing at least one film” based on the Thrones universe.
