Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s creator, claims that evenge will be present in the highly anticipated second season of Squid Game, which promises a larger cast of characters and more engaging challenges than the first.
Hwang disclosed to Reuters that a third edition of the Korean drama was already in post-production and hinted that an English-language version might also be in the works while attending the first global promotional event for the new season in the Tuscan city of Lucca.
When it came out in 2021, the first season of Squid Game became the most watched show on Netflix of all time.
Lee Jung-jae won an Emmy for best actor in a drama, and Hwang went on to win an Emmy for outstanding directing for a drama series. Both were the first Asians to win those titles, as well as the first for a series in a language other than English.
The dystopian show was unavoidably renewed, and the third and final installment will be released in 2025. It will debut on the streaming service on December 26.
“In season two, Gi-hun (played by Lee), who endure season one, gets back to the games, not to win this time around, but rather to stop these games,” said Hwang, the show’s essayist, chief and maker.
He stated, “This time there is going to be a larger number of characters and more intriguing games that are all worthy of a lot of the viewers’ love and support.”
The cash-strapped contestants in the thriller series take part in deadly survival challenges based on childhood games for the chance to win a fortune. Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee, returns to the life-or-death game with new players in the second season, which takes place three years after the first.
Lee told Reuters that there was pressure to improve on the original and that his character, a former gambling addict, has changed. He was also at the Lucca Comics & Games event.
In the second season, Gi-hun is a very different person. He intends to exact revenge this time. He stated, “He wants to catch the people behind the games and bring them to justice.”
This week, the Hollywood news site Deadline said that US director David Fincher was working on an English-language version of Squid Game for Netflix. Fincher directed the smash hit Fight Club in 1999.
I can’t say much about it because I don’t think it’s official yet. But, you know, as a filmmaker and creator, I respect him,” Hwang responded when questioned about the report.
I’m looking forward to watching it if he does it, you know.
