As their tightening race for the presidency entered its final week, Democrat Kamala Harris warned tens of thousands of attendees at her largest rally in Washington that her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, was seeking unchecked power.
On Tuesday evening, Harris addressed an estimated 75,000 attendees at an outdoor rally near the White House, where Trump addressed his supporters on January 6, 2021, prior to their attack on the US Capitol.
Harris stated, “We know who Donald Trump is.” She claimed that the president at the time attempted to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election by sending an “armed mob” to the US Capitol.
During what her campaign referred to as her “closing argument” prior to a highly competitive election on November 5, Harris stated, “This is someone who is unstable, obsessed with revenge, consumed with grievance, and out for unchecked power.”
According to the Election Hub at the University of Florida, more than 53 million Americans have already cast ballots in the election, which will determine who will lead the world’s richest and most powerful nation for four years.
On stage, Harris was surrounded by blue and white banners with the words “FREEDOM” and a well-lit White House behind her.
Older adults and college students, as well as individuals from New York, Virginia, and other nearby states, made up the crowd. Numerous women arrived in groups with female friends.
Saul Schwartz, a former federal employee from Alexandria, Virginia, stated, “It’s important that we do not go back to the horrible past policies under President Trump.”
She is everything I’ve ever hoped for in a president. She is happy. She is powerful and real. Additionally, she is a woman, added Staten Island, New York resident Danielle Hoffmann.
She said to men in general, “It’s time for you guys… to take a backseat because we’re driving right now.” She mentioned that her husband is a Trump supporter.
Tuesday’s Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that Harris’ lead among registered voters had dwindled to just 44% to 43%.
Since Harris entered the race in July, she has outperformed Trump in every Reuters/Ipsos poll, but her lead has steadily decreased since late September.
Trump and his allies have attempted to downplay the January 6 violence.
After Trump’s address on the Ellipse, during which he urged the crowd to “fight like hell” to prevent Congress from ratifying his loss as president in 2021, thousands of his supporters stormed the Capitol, sending lawmakers fleeing for their lives.
The subsequent riot at the Capitol resulted in the deaths of four people, and one police officer who defended the Capitol passed away the following day. Trump has stated that if he is reelected, he would grant pardons to the over 1,500 participants who have been accused of crimes.
On Tuesday, Harris addressed the crowd in Washington and urged Americans to put their differences to rest by saying, “We have to stop pointing fingers and start locking arms.”
Trump calls his New York rally “an absolute lovefest” Trump tried to move on from the racist and other vulgar remarks made by allies at his New York rally on Sunday in Florida earlier in the day.
At the Sunday event, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage” and disparaged Black Americans, Jews, Palestinians, and Latinos. Trump did not respond to these remarks.
Trump’s campaign had previously stated that the remarks about Puerto Rico did not reflect his views; however, on Tuesday, he described the event in New York as “an absolute lovefest” and stated that he was honored to be a part of it.
Trump’s campaign was furious with President Joe Biden for remarks he made on Tuesday about the Sunday rally during a fundraising call.
A White House spokesperson posted a transcript of the conversation on X, stating that Biden said: His supporters’ unconscionable and un-American demonization of Latinos is the only garbage I can find floating around.
The same quote was cited by several news organizations without the apostrophe.
Later, on the social media site X, Biden wrote: I used the word “garbage” to describe the derogatory remarks about Puerto Rico uttered by a Trump supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally earlier today. It is unconscionable for him to demonize Latinos.
I only meant to say that. The remarks made at that rally are not representative of our nation.
During Harris’s speech in Washington, Trump went to a Pennsylvania city with a lot of Hispanic residents, two days after Hinchcliffe’s remarks about Puerto Rico caused controversy at the New York rally.
According to the US Census Bureau, Puerto Ricans make up the largest group of Hispanics in Pennsylvania, which is one of the seven battleground states expected to decide the election and holds the most Electoral College votes.
“I would like to begin with a very, very straightforward inquiry: Is your situation now better than it was four years ago? Trump stated, “I’m here today with a message of hope for all Americans.”
Support for Ukraine and NATO, abortion rights, taxes, fundamental democratic principles, and tariffs that could lead to trade wars are areas where Harris, who would be the first female president, and Trump, who is seeking a return to office after his term ends in 2017-21, diverge.
Trump specifically mentioned the European Union when discussing tariffs on Tuesday.
