Glasgow has been affirmed as the host city for the upset 2026 Ward Games, which will be a thinned down variant of the multi-sport occasion.
The fate of the 2026 Games was tossed into uncertainty when the Australian province of Victoria, the first has, pulled out last year, refering to increasing expenses.
However, Glasgow was effectively approved by the Scottish government last month, and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) announced on Tuesday that Glasgow will host the 2026 Games, which will take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
The Games will highlight only 10 games contrasted and the 19 on show at the 2022 version in the English city of Birmingham.
Para sports will by and by be completely coordinated as “a critical need and mark of contrast for the Games”, with six para sports remembered for the program.
Athletics and para-athletics, swimming and para-swimming, artistic gymnastics, netball, weightlifting and para-powerlifting, boxing, judo, bowls and para-bowling, 3×3 basketball, and 3×3 wheelchair basketball will all be on the schedule.
Triathlon, diving, hockey, T20 cricket, squash, badminton, and rugby sevens are among the sports that won’t compete at the 2022 Games.
Up to 74 Commonwealth nations and territories are expected to compete, bringing in approximately 3,000 athletes.
The CGF said Glasgow 2026 would convey more than $130 million of internal interest into the city.
“For the benefit of the whole Province sport development, we are happy to authoritatively affirm that the 2026 Republic Games will occur in the host city of Glasgow,” said CGF CEO Katie Sadleir.
Sadleir is of the opinion that a simplified model will broaden the pool of potential hosts, despite the fact that Australia and Great Britain have jointly hosted five of the previous six editions.
“The 2026 Games will be a scaffold to the Federation Rounds of tomorrow,” said Sadleir.
“An exciting first step in our journey to reset and redefine the Games as a truly collaborative, flexible, and sustainable model for the future that minimizes costs, reduces environmental footprint, and enhances social impact—thereby expanding the scope of countries capable of hosting”
According to Commonwealth Games Scotland chairman Ian Reid, selecting sports to include was challenging.
“I think everyone perceives that these occasions should be more reasonable, lighter and we would have wanted to have our games in general and our competitors contending yet tragically it’s all’s only not deliverable or reasonable for this time span,” he told the BBC.
However, he stated that the program might change for subsequent Games and grow in size depending on the venues.
Australia would cover a portion of the costs following Victoria’s withdrawal, according to the CGF, so there would be no need for public funding to carry out the Glasgow Games.
Victoria cited a projected cost of over $4 billion as the reason for her withdrawal.
The Ward Games, held like clockwork, developed out of the English Domain Games and is as yet made up principally of nations and regions once dependent upon English royal rule.
