Legislation that proposes a set of constitutional amendments, including the extension of the term of the top judge, is the much-discussed Constitutional Package.
The government, the PPP, and the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) are currently working on three distinct versions of the constitutional package.
All parties, including the PTI, are represented on the committee, which is headed by Khursheed Shah from the PPP. It was shaped by the Public Gathering speaker for compromise among legislators, especially between the PTI and the public authority, after a strike by plainclothesmen to gather together the PTI men from the Parliament House.
Major political parties, including the PML-N, PPP, PTI, and JUI-F, met today to discuss drafts for the constitutional package at the parliamentary committee meeting.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar told reporters after the meeting that the committee received recommendations but could not come to an agreement.
He added, “The PTI asked for time to examine, and they did not give their opinions today,” and that the JUI-F, which was expected to share its suggestions at today’s meeting, was also requested to share its draft. He mentioned that the party may present its draft tomorrow.
He continued, “We will meet tomorrow at noon to move things along.” According to Tarar, the suggestions from the bar associations and the government were presented to the committee, and it was decided to hold a second meeting on Saturday.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of the JUI-F, said that the government had shared a draft for the first time. He also said that the PPP and JUI-F would talk to each other and try to come up with a single draft. After that, it would be shared with the PML-N and PTI to see if they could come to an agreement.
He stated that additional political parties would be included.
The meeting also included PTI leaders Amir Dogar and Barrister Ali Gohar.
Gohar stated that when a comprehensive draft was presented, the PTI would offer recommendations.
He stated, “We have not seen anything from the government.”
Dogar, on the other hand, stated that the government’s draft “has ambiguity” and that it should clearly present its plans to the committee. He said that the committee would meet again.
He added, “We will talk with party members and experts, and with Maulana Fazlur Rehman as we have an understanding.” “The amendment requires more time.”
Prior to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, the PPP and PML-N decided to delay the much-anticipated constitutional amendment and agreed to incorporate Fazl’s suggestions as the ruling coalition seeks his support for a two-thirds majority in parliament.
