In light of reports of violence leading up to the three-day Pashtoon Qaumi Jirga in Khyber district, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Wednesday criticized the recently banned Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) for its rhetoric.
If done “properly,” he stated, the government would be willing to discuss rights-related issues with anyone.
The PTM was banned by the federal government on Sunday because it posed a threat to national security and peace. The three-day Pashtoon Qaumi Jirga, also known as the Pashtun Qaumi Adalat, organized by the PTM, was banned from participating by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government a day ago and a public warning was issued against any association with it. Section 144 was also imposed on the district by retired Captain Sanaullah Khan, the Khyber Deputy Commissioner.
The action was taken prior to the grand jirga, which was to take place on October 11 in the Khyber district. In clear defiance of the directive from the federal government, zealous activists gathered on Sunday evening at the location of their three-day jirga in Jamrud and pledged to hold the event.
