Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 Kicks Off Today in UAE with New Technology
The Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 is set to begin today in the UAE, marking a historic moment for the ICC as it will use new technology for the first time in an event.
The ICC has organized over three dozen international events to date, but this year’s Women’s T20 World Cup will incorporate technology that the council has never used before.
According to foreign media, the tournament will utilize the Smart Replay System technology, which has previously been employed in league tournaments like The Hundred and IPL 2024. However, this is the first time it will be used in an ICC tournament.
Under the Smart Replay System, each match will be covered by 28 cameras, assisting TV umpires in making better decisions.
The ICC stated that coverage for every match will involve these 28 cameras, with various methods for further scrutiny. Additionally, the Decision Review System (DRS) will be available for all matches, enabling the third umpire to make informed calls.
Through the Smart Replay System, TV umpires will receive direct messages from Hawk-Eye operators, who will work in the same room as the third umpire. The Hawk-Eye operator will be able to quickly relay footage captured by high-speed cameras to the third umpire.
Previously, the TV broadcast director served as a bridge between the Hawk-Eye system and the third umpire, but this role will no longer be necessary with the implementation of the Smart Replay System.
This system will provide the third umpire with access to more images than before, including split-screen visuals to aid in decision-making.
Furthermore, to eliminate ambiguities related to the ball touching the bat or wickets, the umpire will have access to footage from different angles, which will assist in making accurate decisions.
