Islamabad: IMF Mission Chief Nathan Porter Discusses Pakistan’s Economic Future
In a recent statement, Nathan Porter, the IMF Mission Chief in Pakistan, mentioned that if Pakistan implements economic recommendations sincerely, this could be its final program with the IMF.
Speaking to a U.S. broadcasting outlet, Porter noted that after the economic fluctuations and uncertainties experienced by Pakistan in mid-2023, the country is now seeing signs of economic stability.
He emphasized that this program could provide a solid foundation for advancing the economy and reiterated that if Pakistan follows the economic proposals earnestly, it may well be the last program required.
When asked about the stringent conditions associated with the loan, Porter explained that specific issues faced by any country are taken into account, and solutions are provided accordingly. He indicated that Pakistan’s current program is not overly harsh and is consistent with this approach.
Porter also expressed opposition to offering special concessions to Special Economic Zones, stating that the IMF does not view incentives for businesses as helpful in achieving economic goals.
