Babar Azam: Pakistan’s Second Most Successful Captain
Pakistan’s renowned cricketer, who announced his resignation from the captaincy of the white-ball team yesterday, has a notable record. Despite leading the team in several ICC tournaments during his four-year tenure and not securing any trophies, he stands as the second most successful captain in Pakistan’s history after the World Cup 1992-winning captain, Imran Khan.
According to statistics from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Babar Azam captained the national team in 137 international matches, winning 83 of them, which gives him a success rate of over 60%. Under his leadership, Pakistan achieved victories in 47 out of 84 T20 matches, resulting in a success rate of approximately 56%.
Babar also holds the distinction of leading Pakistan to its first-ever victory over India in ICC World Cup history. He is recognized for scoring the most centuries as captain and accumulating a total of 6,739 runs.
The only captain ahead of Babar is Imran Khan, who led Pakistan to the 1992 World Cup victory. Khan captained the national team in 187 matches from 1982 to 1992, securing 89 victories, making him the most successful captain in Pakistan’s history.
In third place is the famous fast bowler Wasim Akram, known as the “Sultan of Swing.” He captained Pakistan in 134 matches, achieving 78 wins.
Misbah-ul-Haq ranks fourth, winning 77 matches out of 151. Inzamam-ul-Haq, Pakistan’s most successful ODI batsman, is fifth on the list with 63 victories out of 119 matches.
Sarfraz Ahmed, who led Pakistan to its first Champions Trophy title, captained the team in 100 matches, securing 61 victories. His win percentage of 61% surpasses that of all the previous captains mentioned.
