Mumbai: In a bizarre incident in India, counterfeit currency notes worth ₹13 million (₹1.3 crore) were seized, bearing the image of Bollywood actor Anupam Kher instead of Mahatma Gandhi.
According to Indian media, police in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, recovered the fake currency notes where the iconic image of Mahatma Gandhi had been replaced with that of Anupam Kher. Additionally, the notes featured “Rezol Bank of India” instead of the official “Reserve Bank of India.”
A viral video on social media showed ₹500 notes with Anupam Kher’s face instead of Gandhi’s. Sharing the viral clip, Anupam Kher humorously commented, “My face on the ₹500 note instead of Gandhi Ji… anything is possible.”
The incident unfolded when individuals bought 2100 grams of gold worth ₹16 million (₹1.6 crore) from the owner of a firm dealing in silver and gold coins, Mehul Thakur. They paid ₹13 million in fake notes and promised to deliver the remaining ₹3 million later. When Thakur’s employee went to deliver the gold, the fraudsters fled, leaving behind the counterfeit cash. The police have launched a manhunt for the culprits.
