Karachi: Medical experts have revealed that approximately 700,000 people die by suicide globally each year, with suicide now being the fourth leading cause of death among those under 30 in Pakistan, where 60% of the population falls within this age group.
The Pakistan Institute of Living and Learning (PILL) has introduced a strategy to combat the rising suicide rates. The event was attended by Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho. CEO of PILL and renowned psychologist, Dr. Naseem Chaudhry, shared that global statistics indicate about 700,000 suicides annually, with suicide becoming an alarming cause of death in Pakistan.
Dr. Chaudhry emphasized the need for urgent intervention and highlighted PILL’s efforts, which include reporting suicide cases and collecting data to better understand and address the issue.
Speaking at the event, Health Minister Dr. Azra Pechuho stressed the importance of addressing mental health at a societal level. She also noted the shortage of mental health professionals in the country and pointed to the training of Lady Health Workers in recognizing and preventing depression and suicide as part of the solution.
The minister called for special rehabilitation facilities in major hospitals for cancer, burn, and heart patients, while also addressing other critical factors like sexual violence and substance abuse, which are contributing causes to the rising suicide rates.
