Amsterdam: Experts have issued a warning to Android users about a malware-infected app that is disguised as platforms like Google Chrome to carry out fraudulent activities.
This malware specifically targets users’ bank accounts and has the capability to access highly sensitive information.
According to cybersecurity researchers from ThreatFabric, this is a new variant of the Octo Android malware, named Octo 2, which is spreading across Europe.
ThreatFabric had previously identified a dangerous banking Trojan, Octo, in April 2022. Since then, the malware has evolved significantly.
Octo 2’s mechanism is far more advanced than its predecessor, making it harder to detect.
Using this app, hackers can remotely lock and mute the device’s screen and launch any app, even sending malware-laden messages to contacts.
This malware poses a serious threat as it can infiltrate users’ SMS systems, enabling hackers to intercept any codes received, such as verification codes.
