Oprah Winfrey has reportedly purchased the rights to her biographical documentary from Apple TV+, stopping its release. The media mogul, who signed a deal with Apple in 2018, was initially set to have the documentary directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald. However, according to *Page Six*, Winfrey was dissatisfied with the final version and chose to buy back the rights after Macdonald refused to make changes.
A spokesperson for Winfrey confirmed the project has been shelved, stating, “As the Apple TV+ deal was coming to an end, Ms. Winfrey bought back the rights to her docuseries and has since decided to put the doc on hold.” The documentary, announced in 2021, remains in limbo, with Winfrey feeling “it wasn’t the right time” for its release.
This decision follows a previous halted project in 2020 when Winfrey dropped the documentary *On the Record* just weeks before its Sundance premiere.
