Prince Andrew’s refusal to vacate Royal Lodge has been brought into focus by royal expert Michael Cole, as tensions between the Duke of York and King Charles continue to escalate.
Since 2003, Andrew has lived in Royal Lodge with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, holding a 75-year lease on the property. However, King Charles is urging his brother to relocate to Frogmore Cottage, formerly home to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Speaking to GB News, former royal correspondent Michael Cole explained that Andrew feels “entitled” to the security currently funded by the King, although these arrangements are set to expire soon.
“Andrew believes he deserves the security protection, but the contract has been terminated, and the King is sending a clear signal by withdrawing the payment,” Cole stated.
Maintaining the Royal Lodge comes at a high cost due to its size and age, and Cole highlighted that once the King stops paying for Andrew’s security, the financial burden could force him to reconsider staying.
According to Cole, relocating to Frogmore Cottage would alleviate security concerns since it is closer to Windsor Castle, within the castle’s secure boundary. However, Andrew remains reluctant, viewing his current residence as a symbol of his royal status as the Queen’s second son.
Despite Andrew’s determination to stay, Cole questioned whether the Duke can afford the hefty expenses once he has to pay for his own security, adding, “Reality might bite when it comes to his bank balance.”
