U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles is battling to reclaim her Olympic bronze medal, with video evidence from the Netflix docuseries *Simone Biles Rising* potentially pivotal in her case.
Chiles originally earned the bronze in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) later decided that her coach’s challenge was submitted late, awarding the medal to Romania’s Ana Barbosu instead.
Chiles’ legal team has now appealed to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland, presenting video evidence that allegedly proves her coach’s inquiry was within the permissible time limit. This footage, captured by the Netflix crew documenting Simone Biles’ Olympic journey, reportedly shows Chiles’ coach approaching the judges’ table and lodging a verbal objection within the allowed timeframe, contradicting the CAS ruling.
Chiles’ attorney argues that her “right to be heard” was infringed upon when the CAS did not consider this video evidence. There are also claims of a conflict of interest involving the head of the CAS panel that ruled on her case.
The appeal’s outcome is pending, but the Netflix footage could significantly impact the case, potentially reinstating Chiles’ bronze medal and setting a precedent for the inclusion of video evidence in sports arbitration.
