The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating holding the IPL 2025 mega auction overseas, with Abu Dhabi currently leading the shortlist. Muscat and Doha are also being considered as potential locations.
Though the exact dates for the auction are yet to be finalized, sources suggest that it may be scheduled for either the second week of November or the third week of December. The auction is planned to occur before BCCI Secretary Jay Shah begins his tenure as ICC chairman on December 1, 2024.
“The BCCI is exploring various options, and the franchises will be informed about the final venue in due course,” a source close to the development revealed.
The BCCI’s operations team is assessing logistical needs and the availability of key personnel. A final decision on the venue is expected in the coming weeks.
Following last year’s IPL auction in Dubai, the BCCI is considering several Middle Eastern cities and possibly London for this year’s event, though Abu Dhabi appears to be the frontrunner. The two-day auction is anticipated to be held around November 16-17 or between December 15-20.
In other IPL-related news, the retention policy for IPL 2025 has not yet been officially communicated to the franchises. Despite promises from the BCCI to release the updated policy by early August, no formal update has been provided, leaving franchises in limbo regarding their planning.
Sources suggest that an official update on the retention rules may be issued by the end of this week or early next week, allowing franchises to finalize their travel and logistical arrangements based on the auction’s date and location.
Meanwhile, former Indian cricket coaches Vikram Rathour and Paras Mhambrey are reportedly in talks with franchises for coaching roles. Rathour is expected to rejoin Rahul Dravid at Rajasthan Royals, while Mhambrey is negotiating and has declined a commentary offer.
Additionally, Punjab Kings have announced Ricky Ponting as their new head coach, succeeding his previous role at Delhi Capitals. Former Indian fast bowler Munaf Patel is also anticipated to join an IPL team as a coach for the upcoming season.
