HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A Houston Police Department officer sustained injuries from gunfire on Monday, coinciding with Hurricane Beryl’s impact on the city, according to investigators.
HPD reported that officers responded to a disturbance call involving a man allegedly assaulting a disabled elderly couple at an apartment complex in the 6000 block of Hollister Street around 8 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers encountered the suspect, who may or may not have been related to the couple. As they approached, someone alerted them that the suspect was armed. The officers commanded the suspect to drop the weapon, prompting him to fire shots in their direction.
One officer was struck in the upper thigh during the incident.
Reportedly, Houston police did not return fire, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The suspect eventually surrendered and was taken into custody.
The injured officer was transported to Memorial Hermann hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
“Our duty is to protect and ensure everyone’s safety, to ensure that everyone returns home safely. It’s been challenging, especially with the impact of a hurricane more severe than anticipated,” stated acting HPD Chief Larry Satterwhite.
