HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A woman was killed during a major wreck on the East Freeway at the Beltway, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
Houston TranStar verified the multi-vehicle crash at 6:03 a.m. on Saturday on IH-10 East at the Beltway.
The city’s transportation department reported it to be a four-vehicle crash, but investigators with the sheriff’s office said in a news conference the wreck only involved three vehicles. Deputies said they are checking surveillance cameras to see if a fourth vehicle was involved.
All of the eastbound lanes were shut down for about three hours as deputies investigated the scene. Traffic cameras show the lanes are all clear as of 9:20 a.m.
Sgt. Michael Gardenhi said the woman was slowly driving a Chevy pickup truck when a vehicle hit her from behind.
The woman got out of the truck and was struck by another vehicle on the freeway, according to deputies.
Investigators told Eyewitness News that they believe the woman was driving slowly because she had car trouble or possibly a flat tire.
