New Delhi β A baffling incident of administrative error occurred in the Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, India, where a motorbike rider was issued an unbelievable traffic fine of βΉ2.1 million (approximately $25,000) for violating traffic laws. The case instantly went viral on social media, drawing widespread attention due to the fine being over 21 times the value of the motorcycle itself.
The citizen, identified as Anmol Singhal, was left stunned upon receiving the penalty notice, especially since his own motorbike was valued at less than one lakh rupees. Police stated that Singhal was riding without a helmet and also lacked the necessary vehicle documents. Traffic police subsequently seized his bike and entered the whopping amount of βΉ20,74,000 on the challan.
Clarification and Rectification of the Error:
Following the rapid spread of the challanβs image and heavy criticism on social media, police authorities moved swiftly to explain and correct the erroneous amount.
Police officials clarified that the actual fine was only βΉ4,000. The monumental amount was the result of an error made by the Sub-Inspector issuing the challan. The officer intended to cite Section 207 of the Motor Vehicles Act, but mistakenly merged the section number with the fine amount, combining “207” with “Rs 4,000” to create the exaggerated figure of 20,74,000.
The police confirmed that the citizen will only be required to pay the correct fine of βΉ4,000.
