Porto-Novo, Benin โ The West African nation of Benin is facing a severe crisis following an attempted military coup by a faction of the armed forces. Conflicting claims have emerged between the government and the rebellious military group, creating profound political uncertainty across the country.
The Benin Presidential Office immediately issued a statement claiming that the situation is completely under control. The statement confirmed that President Patrice Talon is safe and that the “true army is regaining control,” asserting that Benin is fully secure. Government sources dismissed the rebellious elements as a small group of people who only managed to control the national television broadcaster.
Conversely, the military group orchestrating the coup has formally announced that they have seized power. The faction has unilaterally closed all borders, suspended the constitution and all political party activities, and dissolved all state institutions. The military group has pledged to offer the people of Benin “hope for a new era.”
According to international media reports, President Patrice Talon has been in power since 2016, and the country is slated to hold presidential elections in April next year. This coup attempt takes place against the backdrop of a broader wave of military takeovers that have swept across the West African region in recent years.
