Porto-Novo, Benin β The government of the West African nation of Benin has claimed success in thwarting a military coup attempt orchestrated by a faction within the armed forces. According to a government spokesperson, 14 individuals have been arrested in connection with the failed coup, signifying intensified efforts to restore democratic stability in the country.
Benin’s Interior Minister, Alassane Seidouze, addressed the nation on television, affirming that the country, its armed forces, and their leadership stood firm by their oath and commitment to the Republic, thereby neutralizing the rebellious plot.
Earlier on Sunday morning, a group of soldiers had made a broadcast declaring that they had overthrown President Patrice Talon. Eyewitnesses told the BBC that gunfire was heard near the Presidential Residence, and several journalists working for the state broadcaster were briefly held hostage for a few hours.
Given the gravity of the situation, a presidential adviser confirmed that President Talon had been moved to a secure location. Meanwhile, a French diplomat refuted reports suggesting that the President had sought refuge at the French Embassy located in Beninβs economic capital, Cotonou. The government’s claim of arrests and control over the situation marks a crucial development for the survival of the democratic system in the region.
