Bangkok/Phnom Penh – Military tension has flared up again in Southeast Asia with intense clashes erupting between Thailand and Cambodia near their disputed border. The latest assaults have resulted in the death of one Thai soldier and injuries to seven personnel, dealing a severe blow to regional peace efforts.
According to foreign media, the Thai military claims to have extended its attacks to new points along the disputed border with Cambodia, with aircraft being used to target military objectives. A spokesperson for the Thai Army accused the Cambodian military of increasing its deployment of troops and weapons.
Conversely, Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense stated that the Thai forces attacked two locations following provocative actions, but emphasized that Cambodian soldiers did not retaliate. These conflicting statements underscore the deep distrust between the two parties.
Ceasefire Violation and International Concern
These clashes have reignited just one day after both nations accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement brokered by US President Donald Trump. Thailand had already suspended the peace agreement with Cambodia.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed deep concern over reports of armed clashes between the Cambodian and Thai forces. In his statement, Anwar Ibrahim urged both Cambodia and Thailand to exercise restraint and maintain communication channels for peace.
It is noted that a five-day war over the border dispute occurred in July, which resulted in 48 deaths on both sides and displaced an estimated 300,000 people. A peace agreement was signed between the two nations in October in Kuala Lumpur, mediated by the Malaysian Prime Minister and the US President.
